A Classic Children\'s Fantasy Book that Inspired C.S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien! Published in 1872, The Princess and the Goblin is one of the first books in the modern fantasy genre. This book had tremendous and very visible influence on all the (now much more famous) authors that came after it. It\'s really a charming fairy tale for children about a princess, a miner and hundreds of goblins-not just one. Eight-year-old Princess Irene lives a lonely life in a castle in a wild, desolate, mountainous kingdom, with only her nursemaid, Lootie, for company. Her father, the king, is normally absent, and her mother is dead. Unknown to her, the nearby mines are inhabited by a race of goblins, long banished from the kingdom and now anxious to take revenge on their human neighbors… This book came as a pleasant diversion from "weightier" books and yet not from "weightier" themes. And perhaps that is the value for adults of reading a story supposedly for "children".
