His1955WilliamJamesLectures,deliveredatHarvardUniversity,werefirstpublishedin1962.ForthissecondeditiontheeditorsreturnedtoAustinslecturenotesandtheirrevisionsmakethisaclearerandmorefaithfulrecordofAustinsworks. ThelecturessetoutAustinsconclusionsinthefieldtowhichhedirectedhismaineffortsforatleastthelasttenyearsofhislife.Startingfromanexhaustiveexaminationofhisalreadywell-knowndistinctionofperformativeutterancesfromstatements.Austinherefinallyabandonsthatdistinction,replacingitbyamoregeneraltheoryofillocutionaryforcesofutterances,whichhasimportantbearingsofawidevarietyofphilosophicalproblems.
