TacticsandStrateEriesforLearningCharacters Charactersmayseem,atfirstglance,anunorganizedjumbleofpenstrokes,but,infact,eachcharacterhasoneormorecomponentsandeachcomponentcontributestothecharacter.AlthoughthetotalChinesecharactersnumberinthetensofthousands,allcharactersareconstructedfromabout600componentsinvaryingcombinations.Whenyoulearnacharacter,itwillbehelpfulifyoupaycloseattentiontocomponentsratherthanlookatthecharacterasanisolated,haphazardcollectionofstrokes.Thismanualwillhelpyouinthateffort. Whenyouwriteacharacter,youdowriteitwithindividualstrokes.Eachstrokemustbewritteninaprescribedsequence,suchaslefttoright,toptobottom,andsoon,andlearningtheproperorderwillbeimportanttotherestofyourstudyofChinese.Forexample,ifyouseeacharacterthatyoudon'tknow,youwillneedtoconsultaChinesedictionary.Todososuccessfully,youneedtobeabletocountthestrokesproperly.Improperstrokeorderoftenleadstoanincorrectstrokecount,andmissingastrokehereandtherewillleadyouastray.
